Check out what I’ve been listening to over the last month with Bempology – February 2011. The first installment with many more to follow, this is more or less a snapshot of what I’ve been listening to over the last month (January as well, so this one is a long playlist but pretty solid). This playlist includes work from Starsmith “We Leave Tonight” (nice to see the man slow his compositions down a bit, whereas a lot of his remixes and work immediately throttle from 0 – 100, this track is a warm and gorgeous example of pop restraint), Niki and the Dove “Mother Protect” (kind of a darker, esoteric vibe for the first 2 minutes a la The Knife, but when the pan flutes kick in this song vaults to a happy place), and U.S. Royalty (an incredibly fun, energetic band that can equally mirror The Rolling Stones or Local Natives, depending on what track you pick). Com Truise, Active Child, Diamond Messages, World Tour, and Christoph Andersson all chip in with dream-based electronic pop, or more realistically, the shit I listen to hungover on a weekend. Last, do not sleep on an oldie but goodie in the form of Penguin Cafe Orchestra “Perpetuum Mobile” (just started listening to this band and the string work on this song is life-affirming) and Tribes “Nightdriving” (there’s a bottled up early Isaac-Brock-yelp energy here and the rough production values work perfectly – “What use is God if you can’t see him?”).
