Nothing beats contemplative hot chick black & white photograph – Bempology 2010 Part 10. I haven’t listened to Jesse Malin much, but “Burning the Bowery” makes me want to reinvest some more time in his work. Less of a song and more of a power-pop march. Laura Veirs “July Flame” follows, one of the strongest tracks from one of the most underrated albums of the year – title aside, this song always reminds me of that late point in August, when the day gets just a slight bit shorter and the autumn breeze slowly creeps in. Other favorites here are Capsule “I Wish You (Cosmonaut Grechko Bootleg”, a perfect late-night post-bar relax number, just the right amount of electronic glitchiness to be soothing at the 5 AM point of no return. Das Racist absolutely nail ‘You Oughta Know”, which is the best and hopefully only Billy Joel rap sample that I can recall. Stepdad “Squares” takes the spazzed, oh-my-god-its-so-cute power of Passion Pit “Little Secrets” and somehow ampliy the effect, which terrifies a lot of my friends but the synth work is so strong that one can ignore that falsetto. Last, the best slow song of 2010 helps close off this mix with Sharon Van Etten “Love More”, a song that resounds in acapella just as powerfully as it does with instrumentation. Incredibly emotive one here, perfect for 2011′s most depressing movie or your impending break-up (I kid I kid).
