Bempology 2010 – Part 1

Black and white photography makes you look smart right?  Bempology 2010 Part 1.  Always try to position the first few songs of the year end playlist as a means to showcase some of the catchier numbers from the year to establish an upbeat tone for your January hangover.  RAC does what RAC does, instilling a funk undertone into Tokyo Police Club’s already-solid “Wait Up! Boots of Danger” and TV Girl “If You Wanna” is an beautifully rendered manipulation of Motown by way of Cali-lo-fi fuzz.  Little Loud’s take on Memory Tapes “Believer” is quite possibly one of the best songs of 2010 and might not even be his best selection on these mixes (see Part 6 here).  Remix artists often deconstruct a song to the extent you can’t recognize it from the original product, which when it works properly, results in a whole new perspective and sound.  But, when it fails, you’re left with a song that’s a rusted-out Ford stripped of any usable parts, melody and rims removed.  Little Loud succeeds because he never overanalyzes his approach and instead captures the pinnacle of any song,  graciously letting us wade in the minutes that build up before.  ”Believer” is a flat out gorgeous song on its own, but with Little Loud behind the wheel it attains another level – this is Roger Federer’s backhand in super slo-mo, a fleeting moment that you want to drag on far longer than time allows.  Later, the electro fades out as folk bros kick in, with Pepper Rabbit “Older Brother” taking the lead, employing the kind of strum harmony that works 40 years ago and 40 years from now.  Foals close things out with “Spanish Sahara”, a slow burner that carries a lot of weight for a band that’s often written off as British hype.  Enjoy.
