Download Bempology – Read / Work edition, attempt to read a book, become distracted by these songs, and put said book down. I put this playlist together and a Chill Shit playlist as way to capture my favorite slower, lengthened out ambient and electronic works of the year. Or, occasionally the kind of music I liked to blast in headphones at 3 AM on a caffeine high while attempting to rush out an essay for the next day (special thanks here to Hans Zimmer, specifically ‘The Rock’ and ‘Gladiator’ soundtracks – always made thesis statements seem more epic than they really were). 65 Days opens this mix with possibly the best cut on it with ‘Radio Promoter’, which I like to think of as Robert Downey Jr. playing Mozart railing lines of adderall and attacking the piano in front of some Habsburg audience. Explosions in the Sky also contribute unbelievable tracks, especially with ‘Your Hand in Mine’, one of the most heartbreaking pieces of current instrumental music you’ll find in the landscape today. So great to just listen to this band’s music and not see it intertwined with a scene of Julie Taylor crying and hugging Tammy Taylor. Two great tracks from Boards of Cananda as well, with the music video for Dayvan Cowboy being mandatory homework (here).
